Start Your Own Blog in 2022
Writing a blog can be an exciting way to share your thoughts and opinions with the world, whether it’s in order to change the world or simply to find some like-minded people. If you’re ready to start writing but don’t know where to begin, here are 10 steps to help you get started in 2022.
1. Pick an online platform
There are hundreds of online publishing platforms. To start, you might want to consider one of these three most popular ones: WordPress, Blogger and Medium. Each has its own pros and cons; your choice should depend on your budget, technical skills, and long-term goals. Once you’ve settled on a platform, head over to that site and register an account. You’ll need to provide some basic information about yourself—your name, contact info, and so forth—but once you do that, you can get started immediately. You can check out an Australian web design & marketing blog here.
2. Study successful bloggers
The first step to starting a successful blog is learning from others who’ve done it before you. Spend some time browsing through blogs that you admire and analyzing what they do differently than everyone else. You’ll pick up plenty of inspiration and ideas along the way. Plus, reading about other bloggers will help make you feel less alone—it can be easy to think that you’re one of only a few people with your dream job, but there are many more out there! One great place to start is with other members of our blogging community: read our interviews with popular bloggers like Megan Hess or Jessica Verdi for tons of advice on how to build your audience and brand. Once you get inspired, share your favourite tips with your friends!
3. Choose your niche
Have you ever heard that 90% of businesses fail? One of the most common reasons is companies try to be something for everyone and end up being nothing for anyone. By choosing a target audience, you’ll narrow down your potential customers and then easily create the content they want. Once you know who your customers are, it will be easier to provide them with valuable information on a regular basis. Focus on quality over quantity when it comes to your readership and soon you’ll have made some loyal fans!
4. Write down goals
The first step of starting a new project is deciding what you want out of it. Do you want more viewers? More money? More fun? As long as you know why you want to start your own website, making decisions will be much easier down the line. If your goals change, it’s easy enough to reevaluate them later on. Write down your goals and keep them somewhere visible; some place where you can read them every day if possible.
5. Set up your blog
Just like any new business, you’ll need a website and hosting. You can quickly launch your business with Encompass Web Design ($4.95/month or $4.45/month if billed annually). When you sign up for Encompass Web Design, they’ll give you instant WordPress installation and put your site on their server (so it’s fast) while offering customer support to answer any questions that come up.
6. Decide on a business model
You have many options when it comes to monetising your content. These include: putting up ads on your site (Google’s AdSense or affiliate ads from Amazon, for example), setting up an e-mail newsletter or running sponsored contests or giveaways. You can also sell memberships and merchandise, such as coffee mugs with your brand name printed on them.
7. Create your first post
It doesn’t matter if you set out to become an established, professional blogger or just want somewhere to post your snapshots of dinner and cute animals: starting a new blog is pretty straightforward. In fact, most free blogging platforms make it as easy as possible. All you have to do is decide on a domain name, create an account and start writing! And while we know there are plenty of ways to monetize your blog, that’s not what we’re focusing on here. We are simply trying to provide some basic steps for getting started. Of course, once you get into blogging, there are countless opportunities for personalisation and growth—and one of those is learning how to drive traffic to your site (and keep it coming back). For example, joining social media sites like Facebook or Twitter can help spread awareness about your site and increase readership.
8. Promote it on social media networks
Social media is no longer just for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. Nowadays, Pinterest and LinkedIn are also important tools for bloggers. If you plan on using social media as part of your blogging strategy, use one of these networks more actively so that it’s easier to promote your new content once it’s published.
9. Keep blogging regularly
One of your biggest goals should be to make sure you post on your site on a regular basis. This can be once or twice per week, whatever works for you—the point is that people need to know that they can come back regularly and expect new content from you. This will help grow your traffic as well as keep visitors coming back. Having regular posts and updating on a schedule makes it easier for readers to come back and check out what’s new without thinking too much about it. It also helps build an audience over time; if someone visits your site and sees that there hasn’t been an update in a while, they might not think to come back until there has been one.
10. Work hard, stay consistent and never give up!
Whether you’re just starting out or have been blogging for years, consistency is key. Your audience will be most responsive when they can count on your posts being published consistently. By sticking with it, you’ll also start to see traffic and engagement build as readers get more familiar with your content. And while you may want to take some time off here and there, make sure that your schedule is flexible enough that you don’t lose momentum by missing days at a time. If possible, keep an active publishing schedule—even if it means posting twice or three times per week instead of every day.
