Cudgee, originally named after the creek running through it, called Brucknell Creek, is thought to be named from the Aboriginal word meaning kangaroo skin. It was established in 1862 when a school first opened there, and in 1890 the Warrnambool railways improved access to markets, for the agricultural and dairy area.
